1001 Talent Street

Suddenly this night I recalled a trip to Atlantic City. During a back-house tour, a senior manager of Borgata Hotel showed us the inside operation of the best casino in eastern coast.

Dozens of waitress and other staff were walking through the simple but not plain hallway. The free cafeteria was full of nice food. In the spacious lounge, some people were playing chess or watching ball games and news on the large LCD TV or simply resting their eyes on the beautiful view out of the huge window. Some others were checking emails on the computers in an internet corner... People smiled to this strange group when passed by us and several of them were asked by the manager to say something. Everything there was so neat and well organized. You could definitely tell how efficient they were together.

BTW, in this luxury hotel, some secret suites were not open to the public. Those rooms were equipped with the best of the best things and would cost USD 10K for half a day. Of course, there were back-doors and elevators from the parking to the suites directly.

But the most impressive thing to me was not those for-celebrity suites. Do you know what sign on the door of customer service center, more than 20 staff were answering phones there, in the back-house? Yes, you got it. That was 1001 Talent Street.

think or feel

People think or feel?

People feel, not think. -
Rochelle (Shelly) Lazarus, Chairman & CEO, Ogilvy & Mather Inc.

My questions are,
what kind of people feel while the others think? And vice versa?
when people feel? And think?
how we can be better off, to think or to feel?
why we are encouraged to think but rarely urged to feel?

how many cases

To prepare interviews with consulting companies, how many cases shall we crack to be well prepared?

For me, the problem is, three is enough to get me fed up. Hope I won't ruin too much of the reputation of our school.

Job and Hobby

Another four hours were "wasted" on my hobby while nothing has been done for a very difficult interview on next Tuesday. Some people have prepared for it since the passed summer.

I went to Lincoln Center for "Carmen" on Wednesday night and a music salon in I-House on Thursday night. Frankly the salon appeared more attractive to me. Young musicians from across the world performed all kinds of instruments and dance right in front of the audience, in 5 meters. They played a great deal of fun and creativity, which I think the two most important parts of life. The International House is actually International Musician House. So many gifted young musicians across the world live in this building. I wish I can share my experience here with the people I love.

lesson from sales management

The professor is fantastic, a real master of driving sales. Some valuable points from him:

1. Right compensation structure is the key for success of sales.
2. Sales presentations happen in audience's mind.
3. Talk what decision makers ask for, rather than walking through slides.
4. Team players must help pull attention of audience to the presenter.
5. Focus on providing solution, instead of introducing products, for clients.
6. The purpose of meeting is to get action for next step - how and when to push forward. Try to make it in details, such as "meet here again, at 10am on next Tuesday, to decide the actual budget". Once this agreement is made, shut up and go home. No more slides.
7. Never "hope" - it is too soft- at the end of presentation.
8. When necessary, turn off the screen and walk to the center of the room to get the attention.

......

shut off the camera

A distingished guest speaker came to our class taking about the on-going issues of a very huge business in the US. When being asked to comment on current strategy and management of this company, he smiled and looked around. The young girl who was operating the camera immediately said, "I can shut off the camera if you want." Then the talk started hitting the most interesting part.

consultant

three quotes

1. When you really want to do something but have nothing to do, you become consultant. - guest speaker, Robert Siegel, Chairman, Lacoste USA.

2. COO is doing nothing so you hire a consultant and let him say "fire the COO". - Edward Zimmerman, Prof. VC Seminar.

3. The oldest one. Consultant is the one who borrows your watch, tell you the time and won't return it.

Consulting industry is, however, still the second largest employer, next to Banks, for Columbia MBAs.

In Chinese, smart and hardworking people - 参谋 (brainman)。

Even so, to be paid well and get some training, I am trying to get in, as many of my classmates are. :(

Buffet, Phelps, and Bhagwati

What would be the five most dangerous words in business?

"everybody else is doing it", Warren Buffett told managers at his Berkshire Hathaway group. - FT, Oct. 10, 2006

Edmund S. Phelps, the first solo winner of Nobel in Economics since 1999 when Robert A. Mundell, another Columbia professor was rewarded for his analysis of monetary and fiscal policy in relation to exchange rates. Both two have made and are still making trenmendous impact on today's world economy. Theory of Mundell raised the unified currency in Europe while the intertemporal tradeoffs in macroeconomic policy described by Phelps became guideline for the whole world to deal with inflation and unemployment. Phelps is 73 now and will continue teaching. "I am a workaholic," he said in Law Library yesterday.

Another Columbia professor, Jagdish Bhagwati, who was born in India, was disappointed, again. He has been one of the hottest candidate for a few years. He worked primarily on globalization and free trade. Interestingly, Phelps was also the hottest for Nobel in 2003 and 2001. Joseph E. Stiglitz, another Columbia professor, shared Nobel with George A. Akerlof and A. Michael Spence in 2001.

google: content or search?

there are some news about Google in last week

1. Google won't make any major investments in original content, choosing instead to keep its focus on Internet search, a top executive from the Web powerhouse said Tuesday, Oct. 3 2006

2. Google launches literacy project. Oct. 4 2006. to put together its books, video, mapping and blogging services to help teachers and educational organizations share reading resources

3. Google is in talks with YouTube. This is not new actually.

So, what is truly going on there?

Nobel vs Ranking by Recruiter

One week before the Nobel winning, Columbia was ranked No. 4 by recruiters in the US.
Students published a simple and small advertising - "CBS No.4, Harvard No.14" on Bottom Line, the b-school newspaper.

Face Off(变脸)!

Garbin.

Sigh.

It is not your business! You are my son! You are my business! …

Marie, You got the business sold.

May 27, 2004

I hate it.

It may not be possible. Cause we have better and cheaper solution.

Montreal

Thanks God, we have the technology”!

something old

Be cool, even Nobel prize just arrived.

Edmund S. Phelps wins Nobel in Economics today.

This is the 3rd Nobel in Economics won by Columbia faculty in seven years.

The last two are
Joseph E. Stiglitz in 2001 and Robert A. Mundell in 1999.

Dean Hubbard announced this news at the beginning of our class and mentioned main accomplishment of Phelps - there is no real trade off between low interest and unemployment. Very short. The whole school appears quite cool. Nothing looks different in the whole campus from any other common day.
